Bitches Love Drama: Jhene Aiko’s “The Worst”

The Worst is the quintessential modern song about women’s freaky love/hate struggles with “bad boys”. Here, I’ll do a lyrical autopsy.

[Verse 1]
Tell me whatcha say now?
Tell me whatcha say
Come again?
If you cannot stay down
Then you do not have to pretend
Like there is no way out
I shoulda never let you in
Cause you got me face down

– A young woman tells her “bad boy” that if he can’t be tied down, he can leave. Strung out over him, she regrets letting him into her life. Now, her face is “down” either out of shame or stress, or he may have her in a compromising position (i.e., “face down, ass up”).

[Bridge 1]
And don’t take this personal
But you’re the worst
You know what you’ve done to me
And although it hurts I know
I just can’t keep runnin’ away

– She admits he’s the worst man she’s ever dealt with. He knows that he has her hooked on him (or wrapped around his… well, you know!).

[Hook]
I don’t need you, I don’t need you
I don’t need you, I don’t need you
But I want you
I don’t mean to, I don’t mean to
I don’t mean to, I don’t mean to
But I love you

– Self explanatory, isn’t it?

[Verse 2]
Tell me whatcha say now
Tell me whatcha say?
You said that you would come again
You said that we would remain friends but
You know that I do not depend on
Nothing or no one
So why would you show up
So uninvited then
Just change my mind like that

– She never intended to catch feelings for him.

[Bridge 2]
Please don’t take this personal
But you ain’t shit
And you weren’t special
Til I made you so
You better act like you know
That I’ve been through worse than you
I just can’t keep runnin’ away

– Now she gets personal, telling him “you ain’t shit”, or that he’s not good for her – although she has been through worse situations than being in love with this asshole. Yet and still, it’s hard for her to let him go.

[Hook]

[Verse 3]
Everybody’s like, he’s no item
Please don’t like him
He don’t wife em
He one nights em
I never listen, no
I should have figured though
All that shit you was spittin’, so unoriginal
But it was you, so I was with it
And tell you the truth, wish we never did it
Cause I usually do stick to the business
But you came out the blue and then you just flipped it
God damn baby, my mind’s blown
I be forgettin’ you live in a different time zone
I think I know what this is
It’s just the time’s wrong
And yea I know what you did
But baby I’m grown
And my love is patient
And kind, and shit
If this is real we can build
Through different types of shit
If you was really the realest
Wouldn’t be fightin’ it
I think your pride is just

– Her girlfriends and male orbiters convinced her to leave him alone, as he’s not the marrying type due to his promiscuous lifestyle. However, he ran “game” on her and she lured herself into his web. She has recurring regrets about him, insisting that she is a woman of her word, he flipped the script on her and blew her mind. He’s cut from a different cloth from her: She is monogamous, loving and loyal. He is promiscuous, adversarial and wanton. But she somehow believes she can “tame the playa”…

[Bridge 3]
In the way
Funny how everything changed
Once you got all that you wanted
Nothing was ever the same

– Once he got what he wanted from her (sex), she no longer felt special and he showed his true colors.

[Outro]
I don’t need you (x4)
I still want you
I don’t mean to (x4)
But I, but I love you
I don’t need you (x4)
But I want you
I don’t mean to (x4)
But I love you

– …and after all of that whining and crying, she’s still faced her dilemma: She still loves him.
